Goosepimp: Boston Funkliciousness April 16th at Vassar College's The Mug

Goosepimp Orchestra, an 8-member music group from Boston is not involved in waterbird prostitution (as the name might imply), but works to make music that combines different styles, resulting in the creation of a Goosepimp, or "superbeing." GPO will bring their unique brand of funk, Latin and psychedelic-liciousness to the stage at The Mug (or Matthew's Mug) at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY this weekend. I caught up with GPO founding fathers Michael Cantor and Bob Greel, who note Charles Mingus, Pantera, Sly and the Family Stone and the Buena Vista Social Club as musical favorites and influences, a couple days before the show.

While you're in town for the GPO show, be sure to check out Poughkeepsie's La Cabanyita (an Oaxacan place that makes "the best mole ever," claims a co-worker and Vassar alum), as well as babycakes, whose pastries and brunch are sure to remedy any morning-after-the-show dancing aches and pains.

Good food and good friends shaped your first full-length album, The Biggest Bang, can you tell me more about how those two elements influenced tracks like "Cojones Libres" and "Forninho Magico?"
Forninho Magico is an amazing Portuguese bakery in Downtown Framingham, MA where we ate every day while writing a lot of that material. The cochien con queso is as important in the writing process as our instruments. You play what you eat.

Any funny on-stage anecdotes to share?
We played a festival in Pennsylvania last year where someone in the audience came up on stage and started bear hugging Jon [the trumpet player]. We laughed and Jon hugged back, but the guy had his eyes clenched shut and wouldn't let go off Jon. "Security" eventually had to grab the guy by his feet and drag him off stage. But not before he grabbed Bob's [the percussionist] congas and we had to play tug of war with the congas. This was 10 minutes into a 3 hours et. Needless to say, we were a little shaken up and have started keeping blowdarts on stage with us. Did I mention security was an old guy with a beard wearing a stethoscope…why the stethoscope? I have no idea. Poor kid. I think he just wanted a hug. And some congas.

GPO's new album, Swagadelic Fertilizer Castle, will be available for free digitally on May 24th, the week of Strange Creek [Massachusetts campout and festival]. On July 8th, the CD version is going to be available to order online or at the group's boat cruise CD release party (which anyone is welcome to attend). The new album will come with a code to download other GPO music, and as the guys state: "We're really proud of this album - we set out to disprove the theory that we're strictly a live band. There are 8 tracks that are all mini-movies for your ears. and butt."

---------
