Mapbag - What is it? A bag with the map of NYC on it (including Brooklyn) that I picked up in Pylones, a quirky little store in Grand Central Terminal. The bag is quite durable and has inside pockets, even a large one with a zipper and comes with an erasable marker so the user can draw various NYC routes on it. Not only that, but the bag can function as a diaper bag and will also serve as a gift bag, as I stuff it with all the other baby travel goodies I pick up. Other cities available as mapbags include Tokyo, Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro.
Hugg-a-Planet Earth - In my mind I envisioned a mini-plush globe for the baby. What I found on Amazon.com was a 12" soft globe with over 600 places labeled made by peacetoys, a Vermont company that fashions educational toys for tots that promote global awareness. While I ordered mine through Amazon, you can get yours directly through peacetoys. The best thing about bebe's globo is that once the mom and dad-to-be pulled it out of the bag during a frenzied post-shower gift unwrapping session, they quickly became obsessed with quizzing one another about geography (so, it is not only a great gift for kids, but fun for grown-ups as well).
This Is... book series - After going through the choices for kiddie travel books online and feeling less than enthusiastic about the offerings, I stumbled upon the This Is series and my (now) kiddie travel lit hero, Miroslav Sasek. While Mr. Sasek is no longer with us, this Czech painter and illustrator, who gained inspiration from a trip to Paris, has left a beautiful legacy with his wonderfully illustrated and educational travel books for kids ages 5-8. Originally published in the 1960s, cities like Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Dublin were reissued beginning in 2000. While baby Dittmer will not be reading these beautiful, large books peppered with humor and city factoids for a while, they will surely make for good bedtime tales read by mom or dad.
I Heart NY onesie (Now, this part of the gift was not ready at shower time.) - I had aspirations of picking up a few I (heart) NY onesies, but the inclement weather, work and other factors made that impossible. However, I found a way to get those onesies without having to stop by the NYC street vendors (although they are MUCH cheaper that way). At fibers.com, you can heart anything you desire, so if the dad-to-be is from Milan and the mommy is from Cincinnati, you can get onesies that (heart) each!
Of course, the baby travel package would not be complete without the whimsical Dr. Seuss tale Oh, The Places You'll Go, which I gifted with a handwritten note inside: "the world is yours to explore."
Con el deseo de mostrar a mi futuro sobrino/a todas las maravillas del mundo que se puede descubrir viajando, estaba intentando encontrar un regalito para el futuro hijo/a de mi prima pequenya para su baby shower que iba a dar inspiracion de viajar y tambien algo que sera muy representativa de mi, su tia carey. Encontre lo siguiente:
Mapbag - Que es? Pues una bolsa con un plano de la ciudad de manhattan (incluyendo Brooklyn) al parte fuera . La encontre en una tienda que vende muchas cosas unicas. La tienda se llama Pylones y esta en la estacion de Grand Central en NYC. No solo es una bolsa muy duradera, que tiene varios bolsillos, pero viene con un rotulador que tiene un borrador con lo cual la persona se puede dibujar varias rutas por NYC. Tambien pense que mi prima podia utilizarla como una panyalera. Otras ciudades que se puede encontrar con mapbag: Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro y Tokyo.

Justo despues del baby shower para mi prima, fuimos a su piso y su esposo y ella abrieron los regalitos, cuando descubrieron el globo, pasabamos la noche intentando encontrar varios sitios y saber quien tenia mas conocimiento de geografia.
This Is ...serie de libros - Despues de ser un poco disilusionada con la variedad de libros de viajar para ninyos, encontre la serie This Is, del talentoso e increible ilustrador, Miroslav Sasek. Aunque este ilustrador checo se murio hace muchos anyos, ha dejado para ninyos de 5 a 8 anyos maravillosos libros sobre varias ciudades, incluyendo Paris y Hong Kong. Originalmente habian publicados durante los anyos 60 pero en 2000 empezaron a publicarlos de nuevo. Aunque el bebe no va a leerlos inmediatamente, seguramente serian perfecto para su mama o papa para leer antes de dormir.
Ropa con "I Heart NY" (este parte del regalo no lo tenia cuando ha llegado la fecha del baby shower) - Queria comprar ropa para el/la bebe que tenia "yo amo NY," pero por culpa del mal tiempo, mi trabajo y otras cosas, pues no tenia tiempo para comprarla. Con suerte encontre una pagina web que se llama fibers.com donde se puede disenyar ropa con "yo amo....." pues, si un/a bebe tiene un papa de Milano y una mama de Cincinnati se puede comprar ropa para el/ella que dice "yo amo a cada una!"
Finalmente, no seria completo un regalo de viajar para un bebe sin una copia de "oh cuan lejos llegaras" de Dr. Seuss, donde escribi al interior una nota : "el mundo es tuyo para explorar."
