Wanderlust Revelation: The Lambs Club Pre/Post Theater Prix Fixe (NYC)

One of the challenges of going to see a Broadway show in NYC is finding a good place to eat in the theater district (a strip that stretches from 42nd street to 53rd between 6th and 8th avenues). The food factions found there are as follows: old-world and eccentric (Le Rivage, a French spot), iconic places (Sardi's), family-style joints (Carmine's) and the usual, luster-lacking chain restaurants. Finding something new and fresh is a bit tricky, until now. Bringing back the swank to Broadway is The Lamb's Club

Praised for its quality American fare, offered by chef and proprietor, Geoffrey Zakarian, The Lambs Club offers a prix fixe menu (starter, main and dessert for $44) before and after theater showings. I came across this new eatery in New York magazine's EAT issue (yes, I have mentioned it before:)).

The restaurant, off of the new hotel Le Chatwal on 44th between 6th and 7th avenue is art deco all the way (heaven, for moi). The main dining room boasts a fireplace, fire-engine red banquettes, black walls with crown molding and black and white headshots of stars like Gene Kelly, Marlon Brando and that guy who played Dr. DoLittle (the original).

My mom got the shrimp cocktail to start, while I opted for the nutty and grapey white gazpacho. For the main, we got the same: the farm chicken. It was huge and had a lovely apple and cinnamon breadcrumbed top and came with baked onions, calcots (spring onions), spicy green peppers and mushrooms. For dessert we had a white chocolate on milk chocolate creme brulee type of thing (being lactose intolerant, I gave mine to my mom, who finished both mine and hers in record time). If I hadn't gotten the obscenely priced $18 glass of Catalan wine (from Priorat, which the waiter first mistakenly told me was from Italy), we would have skated out of there with a $88 bill + tip. But, I had to indulge. Still, it was a fantastic deal, complete with excellent food, a fabulous, show-stopping decor and a super attentive waitstaff (although they were heavy on the hovering at times).
